With more music likely coming down the pipeline before the end of the year, you’d be wise to keep SONNY on your radar as summer turns to fall. While your friends spend their final moments of summer wishing on a star for new projects from Pi’erre or JID, you can outclass them all by listening to one of Chicago’s brightest new talents. Synthesizing a left-field underground style with a deep reverence for Chicago hip-hop, few artists right now are dropping heaters as consistently as SONNY. Having worked with the likes of Ye, Juice WRLD, and Vic Mensa, recent works from Bennetts multimedia company include a special trailer for Minions. If you like nostalgic sample-heavy mixes laced with tightly-woven bars and electric energy, then look no further than “BACKWOODS AND HOUSE SHOES”. Started as an internet blog by Chicago native Cole Bennett out of high school, Lyrical Lemonade has grown to become one of the most prolific and recognizable studios for hip-hop music videos. Does the man rest? Does the man sleep? All signs are pointing to no, which is great for fans because it means that we’re eating all August long – and SONNY’s new single is no exception. Not even two weeks later SONNY returns to listeners with a new banger primed for the final weeks of your summertime rotation, “BACKWOODS AND HOUSE SHOES”. One such artist that might need to hit the poetry books again is SONNY (fka hatesonny) who earlier this month released a sizeable self-titled collection of old and new tracks on DSP’s under his new moniker. The footwear and apparel inspired by the pink line speak to the Lyrical Lemonade motto: Global now, Chicago forever. The 18th Century poet William Wordsworth once wrote “Rest and be thankful” – which is admittedly obvious advice, but certainly a lesson that is often lost on the restless souls of creatives and artists alike.
